7. Chinese Social Credit System

Recently, the Chinese government has proposed an initiative to rate each citizen with a specific “social credit” score, based on their good or bad behavior, by the end of 2020 throughout China. The score is already currently being tested in a few parts of China.

The Chinese word for credit also represents a moral concept that indicates ones honesty and trustworthiness. The social credit system is a response to the loss of confidence in public institutions and the need to ensure that Chinas citizen behave after the countries vision. The primary goal of the social credit system, back in 2007, was to restore the market order by leveraging the financial creditworthiness of businesses and individuals.

This means that every Chinese citizen will earn a rating based on their economic and social status, receiving perks and restrictions accordingly. The score will rise with goods deeds and sink with bad deeds – the standards of what is perceived as good and bad are decided by the government. The government would also have access to data regarding specific behaviours, like any traffic violations and spending habits, making it easier to obtain loans and or secure employment. Your digital footprint could possibly dictate your future. To set the tone, the project’s official slogan is:

“[to] allow the trustworthy to roam everywhere under heaven while making it hard for the discredited to take a single step.”

The ultimate goal is to hammer into citizens the idea that “keeping trust is glorious and breaking trust is disgraceful,” the Chinese government has said.

Contra

  • To be human is to err
    • Every mistake gets punished
    • Higher pressure on bad days
    • Faulty of Big Data Analysis
    • Lack of context
  • No personal privacy
    • Public shaming for bad deeds
    • Personal information can become dangerous
    • ID needed for many services
  • No freedom of speech
    • Criticizing the system is punished
    • Journalists that research against system get banned
    • Dishonesty of citizen
  • Report rewards
    • Citizen become to “hobby police officers”
    • Start of business by reporting
  • Setting of standards
    • Government decides on standards
    • Exploitation through the creators of the SCS
  • Alternative lifestyles judged
    • Refusal of military
    • E Sports
    • Entertainment
  • Getting judged in private
    • By hobbies
    • By buying behaviors
  • Does a high score really equal a good citizen?

Here’s a more comedic approach:

Conclusion:

The system may be built on good intentions but all kinds of good perks have their disadvantages. It puts additional stress on the citizen and restricts them to rant without a fear of punishment. A few of the punishments go against the basic human rights.
